And another thing...in almost 3 years I NEVER once had a North Dakotan say to me "Oh, you're from (a state south of there). We're glad you're here." The only reaction I ever got was a look that said "Why are you HERE? Are you hiding out from the law? Why would anyone want to move from there to HERE?"

Having lived and worked in your state for about three years...and having visited every major town in your state...I'm somewhat qualified to comment on your state. Dreary weather and a state full of people who DON'T WANT outsiders visiting their state, and certainly don't want outsiders living there. North Dakotans are a creepy, stoic people who are dismissive and wary of "outsiders".

ND gets bashed alot, and there are jokes about ND losing their statehood and reverting back to territorial status. When I lived there in the late 80's-early 90's, the mean age of ND's population was around 57. The kids go to college out of state... and they usually never come back to live, only to visit. I remember going to a town several miles west of Westhope, and having breakfast with her grandmother. The youngest person in that town was in the mid 40's. No kids or teens there at all.

What's shakin' moundsbar?! Thank you for your comments. I'm a Georgian, and after getting out of the service, decided to go to school at NDSU-Bottineau. This georgia boy had a rude awakening, but very quickly fell in love with the people and the places of North Dakota. The one thing I loved was the dillegence and the strong work ethic of the people. I miss ND so bad. Down here, there is this disease called sloth. I love people who live with purpose. Shine on brother!

AMEN!!! Poking fun at decent people who don't have to worry about drive by shootings on a regular basis. And, you can shovel snow but getting swallowed by earthquakes and buried by mudslides is obviously more appealing. They can have it.

Either you've been to North Dakota or have met some of the residents. At least you have an open mind. We welcome tourists with open arms. As a matter of fact we have rented rooms to hunters from Wisconsin, Minnesota, New York, Montana, South Dakota, Michigan and Nebraska. All great people and we keep in touch with some of them. Every state has fat, lazy drinkers & we're no exception. We're usually considered hard working & honest. We also have criminals just like other states.

For your information, I know a lot of great out-of-staters who come here to hunt. If you'll read a little more carefully, the undesirables, that I was speaking of, are the ones talking trash about us and the others who think there is nothing here but frigid winters. You're not even sure of our location. When I went to school, we had to learn every state, state capitol and their location on a map. It's called being educated. By the way, it's North Dakota and South Dakota, not just "Dakota"!!

North Dakota has the same population that it had in 1920. Why? Because North Dakotans consider residents of the other 49 states to be "undesirables". What a welcoming, enlightened attitude. Makes you wonder why this state even bothers having a state tourism commission.

I like you quoting Stephen Colbert about ND. I never heard it before, but I like it! I was a park ranger there for six years. I always got a kick out of the Air Force guys who thought they'd been sent to a frozen pergatory in the winter, and then feeding the mosquitos in the summer.

A lot of people don't even realize that there are 2 states named Dakota. "Dakota? Hell, ain't that some state up there near Canada?" Some think 'Dakota' is just a name of a John Wayne movie. I like what Stephen Colbert said about North Dakota: "It's South Dakota's North Korea". Isolated, strange, forbidding, foreign.
